''The Red Cube''
My very own built a funiture in bamboo project
I decided to build a piece of furniture to store our wallpaper furniture, I wanted the furniture to stand out a bit. So after I built it, we decided that it should have a strong red color. I am more than pleased with the result. I think it has become, to put it bluntly, "fuc…. nice". I have built and created many things in my life. And this piece of furniture is definitely one of the projects that stands out. |
Bamboo is nice to work with, it is easy to process and it appears with a nice play in the surface, at the same time as the surface is hard to, eg shocks.
I started by making a sketch of how I imagined the furniture should look and. Its function was to function as a kind of bookshelf for wallpaper books, while at the same time being able to use the top surface as a table top, where you could look through the wallpaper books. I also wanted it to be mobile, so it should be on wheels. After several sketches and ideas, I came up with the following model as a basic form. And as you can see from the finished result, I stuck to the basic ideas. I chose skip the skirts at the bottom. I thought it looked better without, in real life. |
To give the furniture its own characteristics and stand out, we chose to use a very strong red color. The color is actually a linseed oil paint which is smeared/applied on in a thin layer, and then wiped over with a cloth, approx. 25 minutes later. The cloth removed all the excess color and oil. Before wiping off the excess paint. Is it clear to see where the uneven surface. The surface seems uneven, you could say it looks speckled. This "specklednes" disappears when you wipe the surface with a clean cotton cloth. Afterwards the furniture was left to dry for 3 days. NOTE! Remember that cloths soaked with linseed oil can self-ignite by it self. |
To further protect the surface, the entire piece of furniture was treated with our own linseed oil wax. The linseed oil wax was applied both by machine and by hand. The wax was rubbed and massaged into the surface. An hour later, the surface was polished by machine and hand. Then the furniture stood and hardened for 5 days before it was taken into use. And now it looks nice and nice .., spot on in our small boutique, right when you step inside.
Many hours were put into the project. But again, diligence, patience and time are key elements' for good craftsmanship if one wants a good result.
Catch you on the flip side..,
