Genuine Mileburnt Wood Tar

Real mile-burnt wood tar is a 100% pure natural product made from resinous pine wood.

The product is of high quality and appears in itself with a light golden-brown hue.

Description

Wood tar is an old, well-known and widespread surface treatment for woodwork. The wood tar is most often extracted from pine wood, as conifers are particularly suitable for extracting tree tar from due to their high content of resin and wood oils.

Real wood tar is produced by mile burning, where the liquid content of the wood is sweated out. This results in a viscous extract of the wood's own juices and ingredients. It is this distillate that is called wood tar.

A wood tar treatment strengthens the surface of the wood by adding natural wood oils and resin to the wood in liquid form. Old decomposed wood that has been distressed and leached of nutrients will regain its resistance to wind and weather when treated with wood tar.

Wood tar is suitable for treating exterior woodwork, new and old.

Wood tar is open to diffusion.

The wood tar highlights the structure of the wood and has a very characteristic scent.

Guidance

When applying to new woodwork, the surface must be clean and dry. Older untreated wood is sanded or brushed clean of impurities. If the surface has previously been painted, the paint must be completely removed before applying wood tar. Lime residues on old half-timbering must be removed completely, otherwise the lime will penetrate the tar as discolourations.

The wood tar can be heated to 40-60 degrees, to make it smoother and thus easier to apply. The tar can also advantageously be diluted with linseed oil up to max. 40% so that it becomes easier to work with. Pigment or a specific linseed oil paint can also be added to the tar, if you want to color the wood tar. The mixing ratio will then be 2 parts tar to one part linseed oil paint.

It is crucial that the woodwork can absorb, which is why priming is usually not necessary or desirable. Very dry wood can be primed with a cold-pressed linseed oil with added fungicide, after which the wood must dry for 1-4 days, after which the tarring begins. If the wood is primed with oil, the tar is used undiluted on top.

The best result is achieved when the tar is applied at temperatures around 10 degrees.

Raw, sawn wood is a very suitable substrate. For planed surfaces, a linseed oil paint may be preferable.

If you choose to use wood tar as wood protection, you must be aware that the retreatment varies depending on the degree of load and exposure, there can be a big difference, for example, in how maintenance-demanding or north and south facing surfaces are. Expect 1-2 years between retreatments.

Surfaces treated with wood tar will naturally patina over the years and become darker and darker in appearance.

Application

1-2 layers, the second layer must only be applied when the first layer is dry.

Range capability

approx. 3-5m2 per liters depending on the substrate.

Drying time

The drying time depends on the temperature, generally the drying time is between 2-7 days.
