Burnt umber

Burnt umber is a earth color with a deep, chestnut brown tone. Roasted umbra is made by annealing of Umbra nature, which is extracted from iron- and manganese-containing clay. The annealing gives the pigment a warm, powerful, deep, chocolate brown tone.

The pigment is quite fine-grained, quite light and fluffy and can tease when handled.

The pigment is light, water, - oil, - and calcareous.

Miscibility with other colors

Can be mixed with all colors.

Binders

Can be used with all binders. As manganese has light oxygen-transferring properties, umbra has good drying properties in oil.

Areas of application

Can be used both indoors and outdoors. Like all earth tones, has good weather resistance.

Safety

The pigment is described as non-toxic. However, it is always advisable to use a dust mask when working with pigments.
